Synopsis:

Aspen Gay Ski Week presents the world-premier of a staged-reading of a new play, “Unmarried in America,” a collage of actual courtroom testimony and fictional personal vignette, that highlights the key arguments of California’s Proposition 8 case and gives voice to a diverse chorus whose stories have not been heard in the halls of justice. As witnesses take the stand to argue for and against gay marriage, a court reporter is challenged and ultimately changed by the trial she transcribes. Listening to the plaintiffs in the case fighting for the right to marry, she begins to reexamine the nature of her own casual and intimate relationships — and to question both the actual laws and the unspoken rules that keep people “Unmarried in America.”

An Aspen Stage Production in association with Colorado Mountain College and the Carbondale Council on Arts and Humanities, this event is a benefit for the local TEACH program.
